Miwotsukushi Ryoricho Special released on DVD

TV drama Miwotsukushi Ryoricho Special (The apply yourself cookbook), sequel to the 2017 NHK mini-series, tells the story of a woman chef in the male-dominated kitchens of 19th-century Japan. Shimizu’s soundtrack deliberately spans eras, drawing on Western influences including American ballet, electric blues, and ragtime plus his trademark lush orchestral arrangements. The result is an intriguing sense of oldness and incongruity, echoing the heroine's “swaying heart” as she pits her quirky modernity against the establishment.
