Senya Ichiya (Thousand and One Nights) – soundtrack by Yasuaki Shimizu – opens at cinemas nationwide 7 October

A beautiful port town on a remote northern island, where a beloved husband suddenly disappears, reason unknown…. The story of a woman – her strength and fragility – and her fraught days awaiting her husband’s return.

Documentary film director Nao Kubota took his inspiration for this drama set on Sado Island from the missing persons list, and Kenji Aoki wrote the original script. A work eight years in the making, complicated repeatedly by Covid.

Shimizu's saxophone songs punctuate the space, dot-like, and send ripples into to the land and the hearts of those interwoven with Sado.

Ignited on reading the script, Shimizu says his body "automatically synced to the movie."
