Set in a palliative care ward where patients face the end of their lives, “Owakare (Farewell) Hospital” quietly explores human relationships and the meaning of living. Based on the manga by Bakka Okita, the first series aired in 2024 to great acclaim, followed by the sequel in April 2026.
Building on the atmosphere and motifs of the first series, Shimizu’s new compositions lean into the lives of the individual characters:
“Tortoise March” – Echoing the century-long journey of the upright former politician Shosuke Anzai; “Marmalade” – Reflecting the aura of Madame Mie, a snack bar hostess with deep, storied ties to the past (ie Anzai!); “Sakura Waltz” – A delicate exploration of the memories haunting bestselling novelist Mimi Sakurada.
The album also includes “Yuho,” a collection of sonic fragments captured during Shimizu’s improvisational sessions. A soundtrack that reaches into the listener’s own memories, leaving a profound and lasting resonance….
